Ideas Seminar – Digital Art Center (Digital Fabrication)
Date: August 13, 2013

Our world today has many changed than in the past all sorts of technology have been invented to make work easier for human. Similarly, architecture design has evolved and changed into many different ways to improve the quality of life and fit lifestyle of people in a particular place at a particular time. Modern architecture can be some of the most futuristic, colorful, innovative designs ever. Modern architecture these days there are so many materials that architects can use to create different effects on buildings. Architectural pioneers such as Frank Gehry introduced the world to the extreme forms made possible by digital fabrication. It is now possible to transfer designs made on computer to computer-controlled machinery that creates actual building components.

I think Digital Fabrication enable people to make everything what they want and play important roles in the parametric architectural models. Professor Chris showed us sort of examples about parametric architecture the most fascinate to me was working with robots. I thought it’s hard to actually make architecture with robots due to many limitations. Although highly ambitious and sophisticated, most attempts at using robotic processes in architecture might fail because of the computer technology system or even the complete construction process. However he presents in a clear way with very good examples the methods behind digital fabrication. I have an idea with the possibilities the potentials of robotic processes in architecture and to develop large scale building.

Buildings no longer needed to be boxes, they could be created to fit spaces, to respond to the local environment and to natural elements. This computer software for digital fabrication should be designed to calculate intelligently how an architectural construction might be built with bending and twisting as keep maximum efficiency. Architect and designer are able to determine the possible forms of the end design. Today, architects are challenged to innovate ways of making the best use of space and location. I think parametric architecture can be useful way that the space within a building is being used at maximum capacity.

The challenge then for all the great opportunities that Gehry and others opened up for us, is that we must try to resolve how to these tools smartly and to refine the connection between our history and our future.
