SUMMARY

I was impressed when I walk in Professor Celine Latulipe’s office. There are lots of post-it representing people on the wall. It tells us what she was doing. Prof. Celine Latulipe gave us a brief introduction about her research. Her research interest is Human Computer Interaction (HCI) making computer useful for people. In this sense, she talks about ongoing project with dance department, Dance Draw Project which is web-based application where people can upload video and left comments to create interaction techniques and support for the collaborative performing arts process. It shows us how computer technologies can be important in supporting and evaluating creative work practices.

And then she talks about her another research using hands. She has been studied by two handed interaction for a long time and developed software that creates more ways for us to interact using both hands at the same time. She explained about her PhD work in which she designed a photo editing software that supports multiple pointing devices. Two separate pointers were used to control hue and saturation and the curve. Usually we use only one hand click on the mouse all the time. This works explains how using both hands can be very helpful on computer works.

I think this project is related to paper yesterday ‘Body-Centric Design Space for Multi-surface Interaction’. From this research, I’m very interested in how our body can be used and extend in multi surface interaction techniques. I’ve thought before when I use computer or Smartphone there’s limited space for interaction and limits the range of gestures. Understanding bodyscape is essential to study body centric design space and interaction studies. They classifies existing techniques and helps generate compound new ones and illustrate bodyscape like experiment compare two freehand techniques such as on body touch and mid air pointing. I think, they contribute a body-centric design space that how our body can be used to create rich interaction possibilities and suggest about future work.

I thought traditional computer science is full of technical terms and programming and encoding which is unfamiliar to me and stuck in to the room without creativity. But she made me change my mind. Professor Celine Latulipe work is very interesting. She works with other people all the time and creates practical interaction techniques using her computer that other people can use. I think important thing is that she creates people’s interests for computer science and HCI.
